- KA9Q requires !BM - !MailDir and !TCPIP
- They are not together on the rom because

- Hello
-
- This is it ! The first native Arc version of KA9Q's TCP/IP. After reading
- this file I hope you will read ReadMe10, ReadMe11 and ReadMe12 which
- document the changes that have occurred to the program over the last month
- or so. Also you will see a rather large file called USERMAN which is the
- official manual for the program circa 1989, since this version of the
- program is based on a 1989 release I think its reasonable to include it.
- Compared to the current PC versions of the program, this version is quite
- sparten and does not include the more esoteric features. However this
- version does at least include the basic building blocks of an amateur
- TCP/IP system. Anyway the user interface of this version is somewhat more
- user friendly than the PC versions.
-
- The disc contains three directories that need to be copied over to
- whatever media you will be running the program on. The !TCPIP directory is
- the main TCP/IP program and support files. The directory !MailDir contains
- the mail files, and !BM is the mail sending/receiving program. Before using
- the programs look inside the !TCPIP directory at the ReadMe's and USERSMAN,
- and the configure the program. The main configuration file for !TCPIP is
- called Autoexec, the control file for FTP is called FTPUsers, the Folder
- directory contains the information about the users on the system. The
- Domain file contains information about the other TCP/IP users in your area,
- the file I have included is for region 4. Read USERMAN for a more detailed
- explanation. To configure !BM you must edit the BMConfig file in the !BM
- directory, here again the USERMAN file is very useful.
-
- The program assumes that there is a file called $.tmp in the current drive,
- this is used by both !TCPIP and !BM for temporary files. The configuration
- files that I have included are for a usable system and could be used for
- getting on air with a minimum of modification.
-
- Some of the documentation in USERMAN is specific for the PC and I hope you
- will be able to work what is relevant. Of the two programs !BM is the one
- that is furthest from the original in terms of appearance although a lot of
- the underlying program is the same. With !BM, the incoming and outgoing mail
- is seperated unlike conventional packet BBS systems. The program is
- controlled by popup menus and has a fair number of dialogue boxes to
- control it. The interface is still a bit crude but it is a far cry from the
- PC version, anyway it multi-tasks, more than can be said of the PC version.
-
- The !TCPIP program is nearer to the PC version in that it is still command
- line driven and many of the options are the same. Unlike the PC version, the
- program uses two windows, one for tracing data and the other to control the
- program and to accept your data. Both windows have configurable scroll back
- buffers and each window can be hidden by clicking on the close icon.
- Clicking on the close icon on the Trace Window actually switches tracing off
- on all interfaces and the window will only reappear once tracing has been
- (re)started on an interface. Clicking on the close icon on the Command
- Window causes it to disappear and it will reappear if you click on the
- !TCPIP icon in the Icon box.
-
- The program still has many rough edges. I am distributing the source code
- so that anyone who wants to modify the program can do so. If you make a
- wortwhile change then please let me have the source code and I will include
- it in the next release. If you find any bugs then drop me a line at GB7HMZ
- and I will attempt to do something about it, time permitting. I have
- managed to get somebody else to take responsibility for !BM and that is
- Mark G7DWX @ GB7BAD. I am sure he will be happy (!!) to receive bug reports
- or cures. He will be doing various changes to !TCPIP as well.
-
- I am no expert of the use of TCP/IP and so if you have any difficulties
- with the program, try and find your local TCP/IP freaks and see if they can
- work it out. Failing that try me but I can't guarantee a meaningful reply.
- Local IP activity is very sparse so my operational knowledge of the mode is
- quite limited.
-
- I have quite a large pending list with regard to !TCPIP. My next job is to
- add the multiple window support (ie a seperate window per "conversation"),
- followed by adding dialogue boxes to make it more user friendly. I would
- appreciate it if someone could upgrade the AX25 mailbox (found in AX_MBX)
- and make it usable. I would also like someone to look into POP2 and into
- RIP and/or RSPF. I also hope to support the TNC Podule when it appears. I
- would like to support ethernet cards if someone would lend me one or at
- least the programming guide to one.
-
- I hope you enjoy using the program as much as I have enjoyed doing the
- conversion. It has been an interesting experience and helped keep my C
- programming skills alive. I may even get around to porting the latest NOS to
- run on the Arc one day, when I get a spare year ...
